Dentures & Partials

Dentures are a removable dental prosthetic used to replace some or all of your natural teeth.

Types of Dentures

Full dentures or plates come in two standard types:

  • Conventional dentures after your gums and jaw have fully healed from the extraction of your teeth.

  • Immediate dentures to wear right after tooth extraction while your bone and gums heal. Immediate dentures can require several more fittings as the shape of your jaw and gums will change during the healing process. They allow you to have a beautiful smile immediately after the extractions.

  • Partial dentures are made when you have some healthy teeth remaining. Partials function similarly to a bridge but are removable.

Adjusting to Dentures

When we first fit you for dentures, like a new pair of shoes, some areas may become sore with wear . If this occurs contact us as we may need to reshape or adjust because of discomfort or irritation. After the dentures are properly fitted to your jaw, we encourage you to remove them at night.

While dentures are not real teeth, you will want to care for them as if they were. Brush your dentures to remove food particles after eating. You will need to store your dentures in a container of warm water or a denture cleaning solution as soon as you remove them from your mouth. Avoid hot water as it can warp dentures.

It can take some time for your mouth to adjust to the shape of dentures. At first, it may feel awkward or bulky in your mouth, but with time you will become accustomed to the fit and function.
